About SS-MIX

In 2006, MHLW focused on developing the concept of the "Standardized Storage" where information sent from various infrastructures is accumulated and standardized patient referral documents are compiled. Thus the concept of SS-MIX began which aims for quality of medical care by exchanging and sharing medical information related to all the medical institutions.

SS-MIX promotes the electronic processing and standardization of recorded medical information, and disseminates the materialized packageware as follows.

  • Development of packageware
  • Maintenance of documents
  • Development and dissemination of systems implemented with the same standard by each vendor

To electronically exchange medical information, standardization is a prerequisite.
Standardization imposes a high cost on medical institutions. By decreasing the cost, both electronic processing and standardization are being promoted.

Different medical institutions have different situations in terms of diagnostic characteristics, scale of institution, financial condition etc. Accordingly, the infrastructures are introduced to a different degree. To promote exchange and sharing of standard medical information, it is important to standardize the output. However, it is nonsense to replace all existing infrastructures by standardized infrastructures to the extent that medical institutions are forced to bear any excessive cost. To avoid such a situation, existing infrastructures should be used as much as possible.
